Signing up and Background Checks.
The first step is to sign up for a free account by entering your name and email as well as a username and password. With your free account, you’ll be able to browse the teacher’s lounge where you’ll learn more about LumaLearn.
When you’re ready, simply start at the Bio Submission page and describe your faith journey, create your bio, upload your photo, and click to sign our faith and conduct representation. To see a copy of that, click here.
Next, LumaLearn will perform a background check through BackgroundChecks.com. We want our parents and those taking courses to feel confident, so we’ll make sure they know teachers are checked. The fee for the background check is $15, which will be deducted from the first check you receive.
When your background check is complete, you will have access to LumaLMS along with training and resources, and may begin to create your courses which will be published to the site!
Creating Your Courses.
Because LumaLearn is not a school, you have lots of flexibility in your course offerings. You can choose:
- The duration of your courses
- Semester course, a 6-week course, 1 day course, etc
- Semester courses are popular among homeschoolers, but the choice is yours. We offer – and strongly suggest – a recommended semester calendar, but again, the choice is yours.
- The day of the week you’d like to teach
- The time of day you’d like to teach
- The curriculum you’d like to use
- The size of your classroom
- The price of your courses
- Be creative! Offer a sale, gift a class to a friend, bless a missionary
- Increase your course price when you see fit
To easily manage your classroom, LumaLearn will provide you with a convenient and efficient learning management system. You’ll be able to post assignments, upload media content to share, create tests that can be automatically graded (or manually graded), and log your grades in a gradebook, plus other neat features!
You’ll also have access to our virtual classroom application. This will allow you to use whiteboard, chat, break-out rooms, etc. Additionally, you’ll be able to offer students webcam and whiteboard privileges.
LumaLearn’s Marketing Strategy
We feel teachers should spend their time teaching, not advertising. That’s where we shine.
LumaLearn will actively market the website, both to homeschoolers and through Christian avenues. While homeschooling classes will initially be the prime focus of the website, you will also have the ability to offer courses to the Christian community at large!
Not only does LumaLearn invest in a strong SEO (search engine optimization) strategy, but we also have a strong social media presence. Additionally, we advertise on major sites (this year we focused on: The Old Schoolhouse, Homeschool Classifieds, and Online Homeschool Convention).
Beyond our targeted online marketing, LumaLearn also makes a physical presence at homeschool conventions. For 2018, we are aiming to attend 5 homeschool conventions: MACHE in MD, MassHOPE in MA, CHAP in PA, HEAV in VA, and FPEA in FL. If you’re local to one of those areas, stop by to see us!
Getting paid on Luma Learn couldn’t be easier as we do everything for you. Our platform is integrated with PayPal, our payment facilitator. Students purchase your courses seamlessly through our website using just their credit card. We then validate payment, enroll the student, process any refunds, and perform a final enrollment reconciliation. You receive the net proceeds of your course ratably throughout its duration.
Your proceeds are a function of two items: – Luma Learn’s commission rate, which is 23% of the course price, and our processing fee of 6%, which includes the 3% interchange fee payable to PayPal. Adding it all up means you receive more than 70% of your course price.
While payment plans are not yet automated on our website, we have an established workaround should any of your students inquire. If this is something you’re interested in, please contact us for further detail.
Hosting Your Classes
In addition to using our learning management software to manage your classes, you’ll also be able to offer live classes using our virtual classroom application. This will allow you to seamlessly conduct your classes. You’ll be able to use
whiteboard applications, offer students web-cam privileges, manage classroom chat, etc. Alternatively, you may choose to offer self-paced courses. These are courses that you record before-hand, allowing students to work through material at their own pace. Self-paced courses need to meet certain standards before being published. We’ll walk you through this process if you need help.
