My name is Lara Aston. I am a wife, mom, friend, teacher, and Christ follower. I have been married for 30 years to my husband Rick. We have 4 children. Our two boys are adults living productive lives as God-fearing men. Our two daughters are high school students in the final leg of their homeschool journey. When I came home from my first day of first grade, I declared that I wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. That desire never changed as I progressed through my school years. I graduated from Trinity University in 1989 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and a Special Education Endorsement. I completed my master’s degree in Early Childhood Education in 1994 at the University of Houston in Clear Lake. I taught special education for 7 years in the public-school system before our first child Andrew was born. Caleb was born two years later. During their early years, I was a tutor and worked with parents of children with special needs. As Andrew approached kindergarten, I began feeling the nudge to look into homeschooling. It was more like a MIGHTY PUSH from God since I had written a college paper of why you should NOT homeschool your child! I heard the call, researched, prayed, and talked about it with my husband. We began our homeschooling journey in the summer of 2000. In 2008, we adopted our beautiful girls, Savanna and Faith, after being their foster parents for 6 months. Through the years, I have taught all 4 children beginning with preschool, and our youngest Faith is now entering high school. We have mostly used a literature-based curriculum because I absolutely love books! Our homeschool journey has been enhanced by wonderful people who stepped in at different times to come alongside me and further our children’s learning. I hope to be one of those people for your child. In March 2019, I began teaching English online to students in China. I have learned many things about teaching in an online classroom, and I have rediscovered a love for teaching beyond my home. I look forward to taking what I have learned in a variety of teaching formats, my love of children’s literature, and my creativity in presenting content, to a new teaching space here at Luma Learn.
I am an active member of Salem Lutheran Church in Tomball, TX. From the time I was a young child, I grew up in church. I do not remember a time in my life that I did not believe that Jesus died on the cross for my sins and rose on the 3rd day so that I could have eternal life. As I grew up, I learned more about living a life that would honor and bring glory to God. Through parenting and homeschooling over the last 20 years, I have been compelled to share my faith with our children, and also to teach them to defend their faith in a world where it is not always welcome. While studying apologetics and teaching our children to use a biblical worldview, I have also learned to look at the world through a lens that focuses first and foremost on the precepts of the Lord. I have seen God’s great faithfulness through many trials, and I have an abiding trust in His Sovereignty and goodness. We have had many ups and downs in our family, including job losses and significant health challenges with one of our children. Through it all, God continually shows us His love and grace through His people and provision. I strive to bring Him praise and honor and to extend kindness and grace to those around me.
My favorite thing to do is sitting down with colorful fabric at my sewing machine. I enjoy sewing clothes, as well as quilted tote bags and items for my home. I love to sit on my deck and get lost in a great book. I enjoy scrapbooking and visiting with friends over a cup of coffee. My family enjoys being outdoors, whether it is hiking through the woods, swimming in our neighborhood pool, grilling hamburgers with friends, or spending time on the lake near my parents’ house.
