Before I was βDr. Danβ, I grew up in NE Ohio always wantΒing to look at bugs, butΒterΒflies and taking care of aniΒmals. After eight years of post high school study, I earned a BachΒeΒlor of SciΒence degree in BiolΒogy from The UniΒverΒsity of Akron and comΒpleted a DocΒtorΒate in VetΒeriΒnary MedΒiΒcine from The Ohio State UniΒverΒsity in 1990. After pracΒticΒing at a small aniΒmal vetΒeriΒnary clinic in Akron, Ohio, my wife (Andrea) and I moved to Grand JuncΒtion, ColΒorado. All the while my love for sciΒence kept growΒing, but something seemed to be missing. I remember one day having a talk with Andrea, and the question was posed to me, “What do you want to do when you grow up?” My immediate response was, “I’d love to marry Science and Scripture together, and share this with others!
In the Spring of 1998 I was praying to the LORD and said, βIβll even get up in front of people and speak, if you want me to!β Andrea knew that I didn’t do crowds, public speaking or computers!β Yet, during the fall of that year, I shared with a group of more than 200 in Montrose, Colorado. Later, in 2005 an acquaintance asked, βCan you teach our son Caleb Biology?β Now that was 13 years ago and more than 5,000 teaching hours that have been invested. I love watching God our Creator get the credit in the Science classroom. What excitement when the light turns on for kids β and many adults, too!
My approach is to make learning fun, understandable and memorable. Memorization may land a student an “A” on a test, but understanding can last a lifetime. My classes include lots of doing, stories, illustrations, demonstrations and questions put out there for the learners. Yes, I want them to think, explore, move, observe, record and KEEP on growing in ALL areas of learning. Many of the learning skills acquired during these Courses readily carry over into other classes and certainly life!
I have been privileged to present a variΒety of semΒiΒnars as a forΒmer speaker/trainer with a nationΒwide ministry. It has been lots of fun to speak at the CHEC (ChrisΒtΒian Home EduΒcaΒtors of ColΒorado) and UTCH (Utah ChrisΒtΒian Home School AssoΒciΒaΒtion) homeschool conΒvenΒtions. CurΒrently, I am teaching a full scope of sciΒence classes for homeschoolΒers. I, my wife Andrea, and our son Joshua reside in wonderful Cedaredge, Colorado.
My first “God Moment” that I recall occurred when I was about 8 years old. I remember standing under a beautiful starry night sky and thinking to myself. “Where did all this come from? Who were the first people? Why am I here? Where am I going when I die? When I was 17 years old, I registered for selective service to potentially fight for our great nation if war was on the horizon. It was then I realized that I could die for my country, yet I didn’t really know who I really was. That caused me to carefully consider the answers found in the Bible. On Jan 4, 1980 at 17 years old, I went from death to life and chose Jesus as my Lord and Savior. He put an enormous hunger in my heart to read the Word, filled me with joy, and a living hope. Now I share daily about our Awesome Creator and Redeemer via science. He is the One to watch and follow!
Actively being outdoors in Colorado! Cross country skiing, hiking, walking, marvelling at God’s Creation: the wildlife, plants, and rocks :). Attending our son’s soccer games and helping him practice on his own. Bible study with other believers. Restorative woodworking in our home when I find the time.
