Finding the right resources for homeschool parents can most often be the key to successful homeschooling.

Although there is a slew of resources for homeschool parents out there, there are a few staples that you don’t want to do without. They are a go-to for when you need quick resources; they are an if-all-else-fails reliable resource; they are filler resources or resources you can use consistently to round out your homeschool curriculum.

We could look all around us at the resources available in our community and to the internet to provide the keys to successful homeschooling to fit our families perfectly. The internet has made available amazing high-quality resources at your fingertips — either completely free or at a low cost.

Note: Even if you don’t homeschool just yet, or you know a family in need of extra resources to supplement their traditional school, some of these resources will be extremely useful.

  1. A “why.” Why have you decided to homeschool? Remind yourself of that purpose every now and again.
  2. Be realistic; don’t compare yourself with other families.

Your local library

Many families tend to under-use their local library. It gets really easy to stay home and look on the world wide web to get any and every bit of information you need. Your local library has something the internet can’t match – experience. 

In libraries, kids can find resources, look through books in different genres, and glance over them to make a decision on which to bring home. Libraries also have events like read-aloud hours or other activities where kids can participate for free. Never underestimate the wealth of knowledge and experience the library provides.

Local resource adventures

Libraries are a great resource you can utilize often, but these local resource adventures will be great for planning field trips throughout the year. There are plenty of places around you that you can take your children for free or for very low prices.

Zoo, museum, and aquarium memberships are gold mines for homeschoolers. If you plan for field trips along with your lesson plans, you can get a list of all the family nights or days either free or at a discounted rate.

YouTube

YouTube is one of those resources for homeschool parents that can be a hard pill to swallow at first. We see the damage that can be done by watching YouTube. However, the wealth of knowledge available on YouTube far outweighs the negative if you are setting boundaries.

With parental guidance and oversight, YouTube is a fantastic supplement to any lesson. In YouTube, you can find tutorials for just about any math problem, cooking tutorials for amazing simple foods, and your kids can even take virtual tours of just about every location on Earth or every museum you can think of.
