What is a catapult?
According to Sciencing.com, “Catapult” is the name given to a variety of related siege weapons used to hurl projectiles without the use of explosives. Crucial during Medieval times and even earlier, these simple machines make use of stored energy to release a projectile, or “payload.”
Course Goals and Methods:
Students may complete this class at their own pace! They will be introduced to catapults and their design features, including multiple sources of energy, ways to improve consistency, optimal angles of release, and appropriate ammunition (hint: marshmallows are a great choice!). They will then build and test their own catapults and record their data. Videotaping the results and sharing them with the world is highly encouraged!
There are three lessons in this course:
1. Introduction to Catapults
2. Building a Catapult
3. Testing Your Catapult
