In this self-paced course, students will learn basic improvisational techniques, including call and response, syncopation, and theory-based composition. I will be using my piano and trombone to demonstrate, but any instrument will work. Each week, I will go over a different improvisational technique. Here is a tentative schedule: Week 1: Call and Response. This week, students will train their ears by "answering" a musical line. Week 2: One Small Note. This week, students will improvise using only one note. Week 3: Playing with Melody. This week, students will make slight alterations to the melody of a song. Week 4: Rhythm and Syncopation. This week, students will alter the rhythm of a song by using syncopation. Week 5: Musical Accidents. This week, students will learn how to resolve "wrong" notes. Week 6: Composition. This week, students will "compose" their own melody to an accompaniment using a given set of notes. Students should be familiar with basic musical terms such as notes and rhythms. Being able to identify notes on the musical staff is necessary for Week 6 only.
