In this creative crossover class, we merge our love of books, our love of art, and our love of quilting into one project. We will read the following novels: Esperanza Rising, Bridge to Terabithia, Because of Winn-Dixie, and Charlotte’s Web.
Do you have a young reader with a serious crafty side? In this self-paced class, learners will read a book approximately every two weeks (or as their needs and abilities dictate) and complete a imagery quilt block for it, sharing it asynchronously with our classmates as we go. Move completely at your own pace!
This class will revolve around beautiful literature, beautiful imagery, and beautiful quilts.
Lessons will be designed in Nearpod to allow learners to progress at their own speed, and to interact with the lesson’s information. After learning the information, students will share their thoughts, their work, and learn from each other through a Padlet board. This can be done at any time throughout the course, and students will be able to see the joys of their previous classmate’s creations as they go, lending a feeling of community to a self-paced class.
In the first lesson, we will learn the skills needed for creating our quilt blocks, and practice by creating a self-identity quilt block that will become the central block of our quilt. Then, students will read the novels, and use the skills learned in the first lesson to create a literary imagery quilt block relating to the novel. We will present our quilt block creations asynchronously to classmates through videos on a private Padlet collaboration board. Students can upload pictures or videos showing off their quilt blocks at any time. At the end of the course, we will stitch our blocks together to make a lap quilt.
