This middle school/junior high level class will focus on the general characteristics of governmental systems in the United States at the Federal, State, and Local levels. Subjects covered will include: foundation of the US, The Constitution, Bill of Rights, the Executive, Legislative, & Judicial branches of government, Campaigns & Elections, citizenship, and the symbols of our nation and state. This course is to be participatory and interactive. We will have a mock election around the time of the actual Presidential elections this fall, guest speakers as applicable to our course material, and optional field trips when appropriate. It is my deepest desire that our classroom discussions continue at home between the student and his/her parents. Parents are the primary political socializers of their children and it is my hope that our classroom exercises open the door of opportunity for you to discuss your values and political views with your child.
I anticipate the time needed for the at home work to be about 1 ½ hours per week. Internet accessibility is required.
